THE BASÍLICA

Web by: Urpekofabrika

INTRODUCTION.-
An outstanding feature of any old engraving with a view of Lekeitio from the sea is a huge church bristling with pinnacles, buttresses and a tower sited right on the shoreline.
This is The Assumption of Our Lady, one of the best-known religious buildings in Bizkaia.
Records show that the church had been there much time before Lekeitio received its charter as a borough in 1325.

Editor´s foreword:
Building.- Basically, the church consists of three stagered naves in four sections and a polygonal chevet at the centre, the later surrounded by a lower retrochoir.
An array of arches stemming from the lower walls support the balustrade - and pinnacle - festooned main wall, while also reinforcing the considerable staggering between naves. In the higher level of the central nave, pointed arch windows with Gothic-style tracery perforate the grey limestone ashlar walls. On the main wall, a narrow but rather striking gallery, in the form of windows with sills decoreted with blind tracery, runs close to the wall communicating the three naves looking down onto the lower part of the church. One of the finest triforia in the Basque Gothic architecture, it also helps to greatly enliven the walls.

The round freestanding pillars adorned with smaller colums and abutting pilasters stress the Gothic nature of the church, as does the star-shaped webbing in the vaulting. The archivolted west door, a double entrance with two surbased arches split by a mullion bearing an Andra Mari ( statue of Our Lady ) does much to enhance the Gothic feel.
The door is set into a façade blooming with tiny original sculptured decorations.

On the right hand side is the tower, which consists of an ancient shaft that rises to roof level and a more moderm belfry above.

Although this is not the church cosecrated in Lekeitio in 1287, it may well be the one recorded as under construction in 1374. A century later, 1487, it was all but ready for use. It would eventually be completed in the Baroque style with the belfry in 1734. Architect Casto de Zavala´s neo-Gothic retrochoir, wich gives the building so much of its character, was added between 1881-1884.

Similar to other Gothic churches in Bizkaia and the Basque Country as a whole, La Asunción de Nuestra Señora is, in short, an outstanding example of late Gothic.

2007 NEWS

What is Baptism?
”Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: Baptism is a sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.” Through baptism, we become part of the royal, priestly people of God, called to holy lives of prayer and service.

BAPTISM OF YOUNG CHILDREN:

SACROSANCTA PAROCHIALIS BASILICA LEQUEITIESIS
Web Powered by : Urpekofabrika & JOSUNTZUETA

The current Church of Saint Mary in Lekeitio replaces an earlier one, possibly Romanesque, consecrated en 1287. The actual one is of the Late Gothic style of the Basque Country, as one may appreciate from the floor plan, the design of the triforium, and the approach to the facade, this temple was erected in several stages and at various times throughout the 15th century.
Since then it has undergone various transformation. It is to that carried out in the 1880´s, financed by Pascual Abaroa, that it owes its present apperence. It was then provided with a new sacristy, an ambulatory, and a large side door, all in the Gothic style, with great sensitivity invested inthe construction. Following this expansion, the Holy See branted it the status of basilica. The bell tower, construction of which also involves a long history, is in the baroque style, of needle shape.
As regards the furnishings in this church, the outstanding item is unquestionably the retable belonging to the main altar. This , Gothic-Flemish of the early 16th century, has recently been restored. In virtue of its dimensions and its polychromy it is the most important in Bizkaia, and one of the most important on the Peninsula. The only retables larger in size are those in the cathedrals at Seville and Toledo.
Two other retables have recently been restored, that of "Nuestra Señora de la Antigua" (title-holder of the original churh) and the institutional retable of the Brotherhood of Seamen of Saint Peter, both baroque and of the 17th century. The Romanesque-Byzantine image of the "Virgen de la Antigua"on the first of those retables must date from the late 12th centurt, even though the legend should lay claims to a greater age.
In the Chapel of Santa Ana, today a Parish museum, one may contemplate various pieces earlier distributed about the temple, such as a Spanish-Flemish triptych in polychrone wood, two tombstones(also Spanish-Flemish), and an image of the Trinity, English medieval alabaster, from a niche in Trinity Street, where a exact replica has been installed. There are also various objects of worship on display at the entrance to the sacristy.
Also to be found in the church are an organ and a harmoniun, both Neo-Gothic.
The organ is a Cavaille-Coll that was given to the twon in 1854 by Jose Javier de Uribarren, as the harmonium in 1855. Both are still in use, and it is possible to listen on Sundays (at 10:00 mass the organ & 12:30 the harmonium).
